Extraterrestrische Forschung ¨ Universit¨t Bonn a April 4, 2002  Cosmology: Science of origin and evolution of the Universe Unique science: only one (observable) Universe if space-time structure of our Universe would be complicated, no way to understand it: only observational data from the backward light cone. Lets hope its simple, assume its simple, and see how far we get! We shall see: Universe seems indeed to be simple (nearly homogeneous and isotropic), predictions from a simple model are in accord with observational data, to a remarkable degree!  Universe certainly inhomogeneous (otherwise this lecture would not be possible) and anisotropic on small scales; see e.g. the Lick galaxy counts.  fainter (more distant) galaxies, extragalactic radio sources and QSOs are distributed nearly isotropically (around us); cosmic microwave background (CMB) is isotropic to a few parts in 105 as seen in the COBE maps left  Simple World Models The
