Content Inside: Edmonton depends on North: Percy: ECONOMY Edmonton Journal Nov 22, 2002 By David Finlayson, Journal Business Writer Edmontons buoyant economy can only be sustained by forging long- term relationships with the North, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce president Mike Percy says. The citys growth is driven by northern capital investment in oilsands, petrochemicals, foresty and agriculture. So its vital Edmonton is an effective advocate for northern issues such as transportation and infrastructure, Percy told the Urban Development Institute. "Their problems are our problems. When they benefit, we benefit." More than 30 per cent of the provincial GDP is driven by capital investment, and its not eternally sustainable, Percy said. The inevitable business cycle means it will tail off, and the city has to make sure it is the main long-term supply centre for the North. "We have to be cost-competitive and build relationships so they stop here and buy here." The chamber
