Content Inside: New technologies handled poorly by health system Edmonton Journal Dec 14, 2002 An Edmonton woman suffering severe headaches decides to get a private MRI rather than wait months for a public one. She pays $475, gets the scan the next day and goes on for treatment. But another patient -- raising kids on a fixed income -- has a painful shoulder. She waits four months for the public MRI diagnosis she needs. She cant afford the private fee, and so waits for treatment. These two stories, uncovered by health reporter Susan Ruttan in a Journal report this week, together make a cautionary tale about queue jumping and how it might erode equal access to the system. But they are also about how Canadas health system deals with the new technology that plays such a role in pushing up costs. Despite three major health-reform reports, there has been little discussion about this
