Content Inside: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince · Afteraparticularlytryingweek,FudgearrivesintheMugglePrimeMinster sofficeandexplainsthat Voldemortisback,thatVoldemortisresponsibleforthemurdersandbadweatheroflate,thattheDementors havejoinedVoldemort(andarebreeding),andthathe(Fudge)hasbeenreplacedasMinisterofMagicby RufusScrimgeour. · Meanwhile,intherun-downneighborhoodofSpinner sEnd,BellatrixBlacktriestopreventhersister NarcissafromvisitingSnapeandaskingforhishelpwithsomething,butNarcissawillnotbestopped.When theyarriveatSnapeshouse,Bellatrix(whodoesnottrustSnape)askshimwhyhehasbeenlivingin DumbledorespocketalltheseyearsifhesstillfaithfultoVoldemort,andSnapeexplainsthathehasbeen spyingonDumbledorefortheDarkLord.NarcissathenasksSnapetomaketheUnbreakableVowand promisetohelphersonDracowiththetaskVoldemorthasassignedhim--andmuchtoBellatrixssurprise, Snapeagrees. · Twoweeksintothesummer,DumbledorecomestocollectHarryattheDursleysandtellshimthathehas inheritedeverythingSiriusowned,includingKreacher(whomHarrysendstoworkinthekitchensat Hogwarts). · DumbledoretakesHarrywithhimtoconvinceanoldprofessor(HoraceSlughorn)toleaveretirement.At first,Slughorndoesnotwantthejob;helikeshiscomfortsandbeingconnectedwithimportantpeopleandis notanxioustoputhimselfindanger.Harryconvinceshim,however,byhintingthatSlughornwillactuallybe saferatHogwarts. · BeforeleavingHarryattheWeasleys,DumbledoretellsHarrythatheshouldconfideinRonandHermione aboutthecontentsoftheprophecybecausehellneedhisfriendsforthetrialsahead.Healsomentionsthathe willbegivingHarryprivatelessonsonceschoolstarts. · AttheBurrow,HarrylearnsthatMr.WeasleyhasbeenpromotedandthatBillandFleur(whomGinnyhas nicknamedPhlegm)areengaged(muchtoMrs.Weasleysdispleasure).HealsolearnsthatTonkshasntbeen quiteherselflately. · Overthenextfewdays,Harryturns16,ismadecaptainoftheGryffindorQuidditchteam,andLupinbrings everyonenewsthatFloreanFortescueandOllivanderthewandmakerhavevanishedfromtheirshops. · Harry,HermioneandtheWeasleysallgotoDiagonAlleytobuytheirschoolssupplies.Whilethere,they visitFredandGeorgesjokeshopandadmirethetwinssuccess--theyveevenbeendoingbusinesswiththe Ministry,sellingShieldhatsandcloaks.WhentheynoticeDracosneakingoffwithouthismother,theyfollow himandseehimgointoBorgin&BurkesandmakeMr.Borginpromisenottosellsomeobjectinhisstore. HarrysuspectsthatDracosnowaDeathEater,butRonandHermioneareunconvinced. · OntheHogwartsExpress,SlughorninvitesHarryandabunchofotherwell-connectedstudentsintohiscar wherehetriestobefriendthem(andfindoutaboutwhathappenedintheMinistry).Afterwards,Harrythrows onhisInvisibilityCloakandsneaksintoMalfoyscompartment,wherehehearsMalfoybraggingabouta missionhesonforVoldemort.Onhiswayout,MalfoycatchesHarry,freezeshim,stompsonhisface,and leaveshimthereunderhiscloak.TonksfindsHarryandhelpshimuptothecastle. · Atthefeast,Dumbledoreremindseveryonethattheyrelivingindangeroustimesandannouncesthat SlughornisthenewPotionsmasterandthat(muchtoHarryshorror)SnapeisthenewDefenseAgainstthe DarkArtsprofessor.  · Harryand&RondonthavePotionsbooks(becausetheyassumedSnapewouldbeteachingitanddidntthink theydbeabletotaketheclass)soSlughornletsthemborrowsomeoldonesfromanoldcabinetduringthe firstlesson.WhenHarryopenshis,hefindsthatsomeonenamedtheHalf-BloodPrincehaswrittentipsinthe marginswhichhelpproducepracticallyperfectpotionswhenfollowed;attheendofthelesson,Slughorngives himatinybottleofFelixFelicis(whichbringslucktothedrinker)forproducingthebestpotionintheclass. · Duringtheirfirstprivatelessontogether,HarryandDumbledoreusethePensievetovisitamemoryfromBob OgdeninwhichOgdenvisitsMarvoloGauntandhischildrenMorfinandMerope.Ogdenistherebecause MorfinhexedaMuggle(TomRiddleSr.),butMarvoloshowshimaringandalocketandyellsathimthathe andhisfamilyarethelastdescendantsofSalazarSlytherinandwillnotbetreatedlikethis.WhileOgdenis there,Morfintellshisfather(inParseltongue)thatMeropehasacrushontheMugglehehexedandMarvolo, infuriated,startstoattackhisdaughter.OgdeninterferesandlaterarrestsbothMarvoloandMorfin. · DumbledorethenexplainsthatwhileMarvoloandMorfinwereinAzkaban,MeropeconvincedTomRiddle tomarryher(probablybywayofalovepotion),butRiddleleftherwhileshewaspregnantwithVoldemort andneverreturned. · DuringQuidditchtryouts,bothRonandGinnymaketheGryffindorteam,alongwithKatieBelland3others. · HermionecontinuestoworryaboutHarryusingthePrincesnotes,thinkingperhapsthePrincewasabudding DarkWizard.HarryandRonjustthinkshesjealousthatHarrysgettingsuchgoodPotionsmarks. · DuringaHogsmeadevisit,Harry,RonandHermionerunintoMundungusFletcherwhoseemstohave stolenabunchofSiriusstuffandisnowtryingtosellit;Harryisfurious.Later,astheyreontheirwayback toHogwarts,KatieBellgetscursedbyanopalnecklacethatsomeonegaveherintheThreeBroomsticks.
