Regardless of statistics, though, it is safe to say, though, that video game marketing, until recently, has been almost entirely aimed at masculine audiences (regardless of the number of women who actually play video games). This advertising paradigm changed dramatically when the Nintendo DS Lite entered the market. This handheld game system was promoted to both masculine and feminine audiences--often for similar products. In this paper, I will be discussing the Nintendo DS Lite campaign and methods of marketing to women. To properly analyze this campaign, I will be focusing on how gender is constructed in one Nintendo DS game, Brain Age. By doing semiotic analyses of Brain Age magazine advertisements, and looking at gender construction in advertising, I will consider the rhetoric of these video game advertisements.
